Expressive Photographics was established in 1983, by visual artist, Mark
Stover. Mark has made a specialty of photographing people, and places strong emphasis
on quality and customer satisfaction. He provides a wide range of services, including
family portraiture, weddings, portraits and event coverage for corporate clients,
and photo-restoration. Expressive Photographics is based in Santa Cruz, California,
and regularly accepts assignments throughout the greater Monterey and San Francisco
Bay Areas. Assignments involving travel to other areas are also welcome.
Artist’s Statement:
I started photographing people when I was about eight years old. I was given a
Polaroid instant camera, on a family trip, and had great fun taking photos of
my cousins, and other kids. It amazed me to click the shutter, and in just a moment,
have a little piece of my world recorded on the photo in my hand! I was fortunate
to be able to take a photography class in eighth grade, where I learned to print
in the darkroom. In college, I studied photography with some great fine-art and
documentary photographers, including James Doukas, Robert Dawson and Lawrie Brown.
These mentors were all so unique, and each encouraged me to explore my own creativity.
I started getting requests for portraits, and sports action shots, so I did whatever
was needed. I discovered that I really enjoyed doing photography of people, and
often experimented on friends with new photo ideas.
Now, with over twenty years professional experience photographing people, I find
that the most essential things to creating an outstanding portrait, or a great
wedding shot remain the same – a comfortable connection between the photographer
and the people in front of his camera, and the skills of the photographer. In
other words, anyone can look great in photographs, if they connect with the right
photographer who can show them in the best light.
What began as child’s-play for me has developed over many years, into creative
self-expression, and a career that I love. I am continually learning more of the
art and craft of photography, and it is just as exciting now as ever! I hope that
